With car registration number plates hitting the headlines, selling for record prices, are they beyond the pockets of the rest of us? Or can we all have a piece of the action, at least at some modest level? With cheap car number plates starting from as little as 100, I say why not? But how do you buy on a budget?

This year car registration numbers have hit the headlines twice in the . Record-breaking sales of F1 and S1, both breaking the 400,000 barrier. But what about those of us who'd aspire to having one of our own? The likes of F1 and S1 may be out of our price range, but what about cheap car registration number plates? Are there any? And what choices are there?

Talking to clients, I find the most popular theme is the person's first name. Or perhaps a three-letter shortened version of the name, like LOU or DES. Relatively speaking, 3-letter names can make reasonably cheap car registration number plates. You'll need a minimum budget of around 1,000, and prices rise from here. So is that cheap?

If 1,000+ is too much for you (let's face it, it is for most of us) and you're after a really cheap car registration number plate, you need to go for your initials instead. It's likely you can find something from around 150 (don't forget DVLA fees on top), for either a prefix or current style car registration plate. You must remember, though, that with any prefix or current style number plates you will be limited to which number plate you can assign to your car, dependent on its age.

And then, of course, there are Irish number plates. These are by far the cheapest of car registration number plates (with some exceptions). Irish number plates can be assigned to cars on mainland UK, too. And because they are dateless, they can be assigned to any car. If all you're looking to do is hide the age of your car, an Irish registration number plate is perfect as you can buy one for as little as 200 all-in. Or you can splash out around 400-500 for a word like BIG, or a name like WIL. Irish number plates can sell for 10,000's, dependent on the digits that accompany the letters. BIG 1 sold for a record-breaking 80,000.

To get the cheapest price on a car registration number plate, try to buy direct from the owner. That way you avoid the dealer premium, and vat does not generally apply to a private sale.
